SHARK-sponsored rider, Charlie Nesbitt, claims second British Championship title

SHARK Helmets-sponsored rider, Charlie Nesbitt, won his second British Championship title at the weekend, claiming the British Supersport GP2 Championship for 2021 with his class win at Oulton Park.

The 20-year-old is the first British Champion to be crowned this year with his win on Saturday – leading by 135 points – with five races still left of the season and 125 points still up for grabs by the GP2 paddock.

“What a weekend Oulton Park was for me! I’m so happy with the way the championship has gone this year and to win it so early on is a dream scenario,” said Nesbitt. “Consistency was key, and I tried to score maximum points in every race and of course, have fun whilst doing it!”

This is the second title that Charlie Nesbitt has won after claiming the British Moto3 Championship title in 2016.

“I went into the weekend trying not to put too much pressure on myself but obviously it was a big weekend for me. I enjoy Oulton Park a lot; it’s a very physical track and it’s quite mentally demanding because of its technical corners and undulations. It was a case of going to Oulton, focus on winning my race, and enjoying it. I tried not to focus on the potential outcome of the weekend but it ended up being a very positive one – I’m chuffed.”

Charlie Nesbitt has been wearing SHARK Helmets for the last 11 years, since he was just ten years old and first started riding out in Spain. In 2013, he was given two helmets from fellow SHARK-rider Scott Redding – who provided coaching and mentoring for Nesbitt – and he hasn’t looked back since…

“Safety is a massive thing for any rider, and with SHARK being the first helmet manufacturer to pass the FIM certification when it all came about was a massive thing for me, and they fit me perfectly too – I’ve tried others but the fit just isn’t the same. You’ve got to be comfortable when you’re out racing, and that’s exactly what I am with SHARK.

“In 2019, I broke my femur and knocked myself out in a big crash,” Nesbitt continued. “I was in a right mess, and I genuinely feel that, if it wasn’t for my SHARK helmet, I wouldn’t be in the position I am in today.”

While plans for the 2022 season are still unconfirmed, Charlie is hoping for a move into the British Superbike Championship for next year.
